The music of the night is about to go silent in its birthplace. At least, for a few months. Today, producers have announced that the legendary revised version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic will go dark before experiencing a complete makeover under the guidance of reputed director Jamie Lloyd.
“It feels like the right time to do it. Although sales have remained high, it’s always bothered me not to be able to take the show to more uncharted waters”, said Lloyd Webber. “I firmly believe Jamie Lloyd will do an amazing job. I can’t wait to see how he turns the piece upside down and transforms it into something incomprehensible”
The new revival will replace some of the musical’s most iconic moments with completely reimagined segments. For instance, the chandelier crash will be substituted by a balloon popped onstage; the Phantom will sing Music of the Night to random passers-by on the street; and instead of disappearing at the end, he will weep in his underwear covered in Christine’s blood.
“After the success of Evita and Sunset, I can’t wait to get my hands on another of Andrew’s gems”, said Lloyd. “Despite the popularity of Hal Prince’s version, I think ours will capture the essence of the story better. Phantom is not about romance or obsession; it’s about cameras. Some fans might dislike it in the beginning, but eventually, love never dies”
Jamie Lloyd’s Phantom will open at His Majesty’s Theatre next year, with the official date to be announced in due course. Priority booking is available on the following link.
