The show will celebrate its two-decade run next October in a very special event which will also support the Royal Academy of Music and the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The gala coincides with the start of a brand new tour across the UK and Ireland, which is currently playing in Bristol and will later move to Edinburgh and Cardiff, among other cities.
The circle of life is far from being completed – at least regarding its London stay. After two decades succeeding in the West End, Disney’s most beloved stage show is getting ready for a very special event, which will celebrate much more than the musical’s outstanding longevity at the Lyceum Theatre. Scheduled for next October, the gala will also be held in support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, as well as the Royal Academy of Music, with which Disney Theatrical Production has collaborated by offering schorlaships to several students based on their ethnicity heritage.
On the other hand, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), created by the show’s songwriter, aims to combat stigma, prevent infections, provide treatment and services, as well as motivate governments to end AIDS. The organization, which was born in the US in 1992 and later came to the UK during the following year, is recognised as one of the world’s most important non-profit institutions regarding this issue, having raised more than $400 million in 55 different countries.
The 20th anniversary gala coincides with a new tour across the UK and Ireland. Currently playing at The Bristol Hippodrome since September 7th, the production will start performances at the Edinburgh Playhouse on December 5th. Its next venue will be the Wales Millenium Centre in Cardiff, which will house the show from July 9th 2020 – further locations and dates to be announced in due course.
Since its original opening on Broadway in 1997, The Lion King has been an unstoppable musical theatre phenomenon – already performed in nine different languages. The London production, which opened two years later, has already entertained entertained over 16 million theatregoers while remaining the West End’s best-selling stage production – as well as the sixth longest-running production in all its History. The show comes to life thanks to the work of more than 50 artists and 100 offstage crew members, who bring this epic story to 2,200 people every night.
