The new venue will feature Europe’s most advanced revolving theatre technology as well as a two-floor glass bridge which will lead to a dining and bar area. Named the New Boulevard and located at the exact same spot where its predecessor stood, its first season will include a wide variety of upcoming shows and will start with three-time Tony Award nominated Dave Malloy’s Ghost Quartet.
London’s theatreland seems to mimick the words of Walt Disney, since “it will continue to grow as long as there’s imagination left in the world”. But plays and musicals are not the only way Europe’s biggest show district can keep reimagining itself – and so it will be proven in just a few weeks. Next October 24th, the New Boulevard Theatre will open at the heart of the Soho Club – with quite a busy schedule already planned for the venue’s first season.
Located at the exact spot where the original Boulevard stood, the building has been designed by SODA studio, in collaboration with theatre specialists Charcoalblue, who have come up with an innovative new flexible space, which features Europe’s most advanced revolving theatre technology and a two-floor glass bridge leading to a restaurant and bar area. As for its programming, Dave Malloy’s Ghost Quartet will be the first to be under the spotlight and will be succeeded by a wide variety of shows.
“In the 2020 season, there is a wonderful mixture of plays that are notably different from one another”, says artistic director Rachel Edwards. “The same can be said of the exceptional directors that we are welcoming through our doors for the first time; Bill Buckhurst, Terry Johnson, Anthony Neilson, Yaël Farber and Kathy Burke. It is a chance to explore, to experiment, and to understand the potential of this extraordinary new space”.
The following upcoming shows include the London premiere of internationally multi-award-winning playwright Cormac McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited (January 16th to March 7th), a story about redemption, faith and free will. The next one will be the first West End revival of The Effect (March 19th to May 30th), a tale of love and modern science which won the Critics’ Circle Award in 2012. Further shows include Athol Furgard’s Hello and Goodbye (June 4th to July 25th) and Billy Roche’s The Cavalcaders (September 16th 2020 to November 21st 2020).
