Review of ‘Dick Whittington’: “A Lord Mayor’s show”

The great British classic returns to panto season in this new production currently playing at the Richmond Theatre. Guillermo Nazara shares his views on the show, to let us know if the cat got the cream at the end of the day.

As the holiday bells are starting to chime
The camp comes in streams on the London scene
Its cheap jokes enticing whoever is keen
To the gimmicky charm of a Brit' pantomime

The theatres in Richmond have, too, joined the cause
With some tempting options for viewers to pick
Today, though, we'll chat 'bout some big boy named Dick
Who honestly earned a good round of applause

The old tale returns through pranks, songs and dance
In a lovely production that, of town, is the talk
With heroes and ghouls, and a man in a frock
There's nothing but fun here, so don't miss your chance
The music is lively - the numbers are bright
Their grit is infectiously luring and high
The script is compelling - its humour's not shy
For children and adults, it's quite a delight

The sets are enthralling - such colour and zazz!
A true world of magic you'll see rise onstage
They're simple but hooking for both king and page
And, all in all, oozing great care and pizzazz

The cast is alluring - so worth of a praise!
Jack Danson stands out in his poised title role
His singing is pleasant - his acting is droll
His vim and commitment are sure to amaze

And dear Vivien Parry, your work is so rich!
You certainly nailed it by being a rat prick
Of course, you surrendered to the almighty Dick
But still you're remembered as this great wicked... witch?
The ending's a bit forced - don't buy the fight part
But that won't affect the show's overall feel
To come see this montage is surely a good deal
For it's packed with laughter and filled with a heart

And that's how we finish, no rolling on drums,
By saying that this show, for a choice, is quite wise
But don't sit too close, that I shall advise,
Or you'll have to kiss fingers, shoulders and bums!

Rating: 4 out of 5.
