Review of ‘Cirque’: “The Greatest Showmanship”

The grand spectacle production gets back on tour one more year, bringing a new improved montage featuring additional variety performances and mesmerising physical numbers. Guillermo Nazara shares his views on the piece, to let us know if this ambitious display of stunts and vocals actually strikes a chord.

Every artist knows that moment… That singular time of instant magic when they realised that nothing would ever be the same. That very first occasion to gaze upon an honest reflection of their true selves. A thrilling memory that soon, and forever, becomes the fuel for their creative zest. An unwritten scene of personal discovery that hardly any other piece can ever replicate. And it’s only those exceptionally rare specimens that can bring that strange feel of bewilderment back to the surface – and remind them, through those chills of innocent awe, of the purpose of their path.

Family shows are usually a risk when you accept to come review them, especially for those involved in them – for the simple reason  that hardly do they get any critical points.  Often bland, cheap and, ultimately, boring, there is seldom any motivation to attend a montage you already know you will detest – also surrounded by the kind of audience that makes you celebrate the greatness of  King Herod… I mean, he could take a sacrifice or two, so he has my respects… What?

Exceptions to the rule (that’s right, I’m in command) happen, though not as much as producers would wish for (and viewers, even more…). But when they do, they can totally turn your perspective upside down. Sometimes, they come in the form of stunts and acrobatics. Some others, it’s the illusions that do the job. On a few, a nice tribute singing can be the one that sends those shivers down your spine. And then, there comes that rather unique opportunity when all of the former blend in a symphony of charm and excitement – spiced up with the chills of lush vaudevillian pizzazz, and presented with the soft allure of a childlike reverie.

Welcome to Cirque, a flamboyant variety show featuring an ever-spinning carousel of theatrical blaze. Introducing us to a wonderful world of colour (I’m curious about what Walt Disney’s lawyers would have to say about that…), the montage takes us through an explosion of diverse talent, ranging from highly impressive contortionist acts to heart-melting renditions of the most enchanting, public-fave pop ballads.

Using a mime-type clown (not a bad word about him) as a mixture of Master of Ceremonies and guiding thread, the show manages to carry out an original delivery despite staying close to the traditional formula. All of the numbers you will see, though beautifully executed, you may have probably seen them before. But it’s their ability to combine so many elements in one single act that makes the montage so exceptionally enticing.

There will be tumblers soaring above the stage. But your eyes will also be taken by a full ensemble dancing to the beat of their whirl, as a sparkling finale conquers the scene through a captivating of refreshing talent, admirable technicality and visual spectacularity. The emotion never really wears out, and though it needs a more solid, better developed showstopper, the overall structure is tremendously effective – and the aftertaste the montage leaves is delightfully fulfilling.

Put together with effort, commitment and sufficient dexterity, Cirque makes a triumphant start of his tour – crafting an intricate tapestry of spotlit dazzle that evenly mixes artistry and entertainment. It’s a piece of all kinds and for all kinds. A fair remembrance to treasure. And a dream that shall never be broken.
