The celebrated director leads the world premiere of award-winning writer Josh Azouz’s latest piece, exploring the relationship between two women just a few days before finishing military service. Guillermo Nazara chats with the creative, to learn all the fun facts about the development of the show, and how she’s managed to hold the front.
A play you’ve described as ‘Beckett meets Caryl Churchill’. It sounds as if we are in for quite a bit of bitter fun, don’t you think?
The show is fun and compelling. Joshua has his own unique voice, the poetic crashes into the everyday. The language is intoxicating, and the situations are subversive.
Two women clowning about in their military service until things take a tragic turn. Would you say this is a piece of existentialism?
It is only existential in that it does ask the ‘big’ questions as well as being a very engaging piece of theatre. Particularly questions about war.

What other themes do you intend to explore through this play?
Friendship, loyalty, truth and lies.
How would you describe your directional approach in this piece?
Collaborative with the actors, the writer, and the creative team.
Have you found any particular challenges from your creative perspective?
The main one has been the time restrictions and having to work fast on a new play.

As a director, is there any message you’re trying to convey through this play?
Why war?
Why come see Gigi and Dar?
