Hans Christians Andersen’s enchanting tale relives on the London stage through this impending theatrical adaptation combining songs, live foley, and puppetry to honour the piece’s 180th birthday. Guillermo Nazara chats with one of its lead actors, to learn all the fun facts about this exciting new piece rooted in the charm of Christmas magic.
How does it feel to be starring in a new stage adaptation of this literary classic on such a significant anniversary?
Being involved in a stage adaptation of such a cherished literary classic is both exhilarating and deeply significant, especially on a notable anniversary. It’s a privilege to breathe life into these enduring characters and themes, and I’m eager to engage with both fresh audiences and devoted fans during this remarkable celebration. The themes of “The Fir Tree” resonate just as powerfully today as they did in 1844. This December marks the 180th anniversary of its publication, which originally took place on December 21, 1844.
What do you think makes this tale special in comparison to both other Andersen’s and family tales in general?
I think “The Fir Tree” is super special because it doesn’t get as much attention as some of Hans Christian Andersen’s other famous stories like “The Snow Queen” or “The Little Mermaid.” But honestly, it’s such a beautiful tale with a really important message that everyone should hear, especially during Christmas! Anderson is one of the greatest storytellers ever! He has this awesome way of being simple and direct, which makes his stories really relatable. They tell the truth about life, even the darker bits, but they’re also filled with imagination and joy, which makes you feel all warm inside. That mix is what makes “The Fir Tree” and his other tales so special!
As a West End performer, do you find any particular challenges that more intimate shows like this can bring about?
As a West End performer, I actually find that intimate shows like this bring unique joys rather than challenges. I love it even more because I get to spread so much genuine happiness for families! I believe the most important thing is to enjoy myself on stage and fully tell the story, just like I do in every West End show. This experience feels just as special, and I’m excited to share it with everyone! Seeing “Rumpelstiltskin” when I was nine years old really inspired me to become an actor. That magical experience made me realise how powerful storytelling can be, and I’ve wanted to create that kind of joy for others ever since!
How about family shows in comparison to more mature pieces?
Family shows are like a big, warm hug compared to more mature pieces. They’re all about fun, laughter, and spreading joy to everyone, which is just awesome. You get to see kids’ eyes light up, and “The Fir Tree” is also unique because it deals with big themes, but in a way that is accessible in children.
What has the process of developing your character been like?
A total blast! I’m about to dive into rehearsals, and since we’re using puppetry, I’ll be figuring out how to emote through a puppet! So basically, I’ll be having deep conversations with a tree. I can’t wait to bring this tree to life. Get ready for some serious tree drama!
What, would you say, is the essence of this show?
The essence of “The Fir Tree” is all about embracing the moment and finding joy in where you are right now! It’s about this little tree that just wants to grow up and be like all the big trees, but it doesn’t realise that a super cool adventure is waiting for it. Honestly, we can all relate to that struggle of wanting more and not appreciating what we have. By the end, the tree realises how wonderful its life truly was, and it’s such a poignant and heartwarming reminder to cherish every moment. It’s totally life-affirming and leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!
The show is a celebration of morals revolving around environmentalism. Individually, is there any particular message you’re trying to convey through your performance?
Absolutely! Through my performance, I really want to highlight that trees are for life, not just for Christmas. They give us so much—oxygen, shade, and beauty—and they definitely deserve our respect! But also, this show encourages everyone to embrace the present moment and live life to the fullest. It’s all about appreciating what we have right now and making the most of every day. I know in my own life it’s very hard to stay present. Christmas shows always remind me how lucky we all are to sit with family that might have been busy and get to spend that time watching and laughing and learning. We are all part of the beauty of nature, and that is something I hope really shines through in my performance!
