Lead actor Tyler Ephraim talks upcoming musical ‘Pan!’: “People of all walks of life would see this show and take away at least one message”

Following his performances in the massive hit productions of Joseph and The Wizard of Oz UK tours, Tyler Ephrain spreads his wings onto the Off West Scene through this updated musical adaptation of James M. Barrie’s classic character. Guillermo Nazara chats with the actors, to learn all the fun facts about this new production bringing elements of the Caribbean as part of their hook.

How does it feel to be starring in this new version of such a beloved children’s classic?

I grew up watching Peter Pan constantly, from video to DVD. Along with all the various productions created over the years. My younger self would be so proud.

This adaptation moves its traditional background from the West to the Southern side of the city. Do you think that change carries some sort of significance alongside?

Yes – a difference in culture. Bringing Caribbean elements to this version and representing the people of south London. Allowing the local community to see themselves in the people on stage. Giving people the space to see themselves on stage allows an audience to relate to the story on a deeper level.

What’s been your process of developing your own version of the character? Have you taken any influences?

I have been taking my influences from the younger cast members. As they are the age of Pan, it’s nice to see how they interact with each other. I have also drawn on my own childhood, allowing a deeper connection to my character.

With this show, you also move from big West End shows such as Wizard of Oz to a more intimate space. As a performer, are there any pros and cons you find in comparison to previous larger productions you’ve done?

Performing in more intimate spaces allows a better connection to the audiences. Especially with a show like Pan, it allows the audience to feel more immersed in the show. Performing in bigger venues is great, you have plenty of space on and off stage, allowing more options when it comes to direction, but you can feel disconnected from the audience.

Why come see Pan! Peter’s Come Out To Play?

It’s art that serves its community, allowing people to see a show that has been around for years, but reimagined. People of all walks of life would see this show and take away at least one message. Anyone wanting to watch Peter Pan this Christmas, think about seeing a version, and come watch Pan!
