Producers Chris Wheeler and Paul Morrissey talk The Theatre Channel: “It’s not just about watching a show; it’s about experiencing the heart and soul of the theatre industry”

The London scene spreads its wings onto the digital realm, with the launch of this video-on-demand platform featuring exclusive theatre-related content. Guillermo Nazara chats with the creators of this new proposal, to learn more about its exciting offer starring some of West End’s top performers – as well as if a recorded version of a live art form can coexist in today’s world.

How did the idea for The Theatre Channel come about?

The Theatre Channel was inspired by a desire to keep theatre alive and accessible, even as the world changed around us. The pandemic showed us how vulnerable live theatre can be, and it highlighted a need for new ways to share and celebrate this art form. Paul and I wanted to create a platform that would not only allow fans to connect with theatre from anywhere but also showcase the incredible talent and stories that might otherwise go unseen. It’s about bringing the magic of theatre to a global audience, on their terms.

How would you describe the channel’s principal mission?

Our mission is simple: to make high-quality theatre accessible to everyone, everywhere. We want to celebrate the theatre community, share incredible performances, and give fans exclusive insights into the industry, all while supporting emerging talent and diverse voices. The Theatre Channel is a place for theatre lovers to connect, engage, and explore content that they won’t find anywhere else, from behind-the-scenes interviews to unique performances.

Online theatre proved to be the only salvation for our industry during the pandemic. In a time when live theatre is back in business, can both realities actually coexist?

Absolutely. We believe that digital and live theatre can complement each other beautifully. Live theatre will always offer that irreplaceable energy and connection, but digital platforms provide unique benefits—they make theatre accessible to those who can’t attend in person and offer an archive of performances and content that can be revisited again and again. The Theatre Channel brings the magic of live performance to a broader audience, while also encouraging viewers to seek out live theatre whenever they can.

What will this media provide to theatre lovers that no other form of theatre content can?

The Theatre Channel offers a unique, immersive experience that combines the intimacy of digital with the grandeur of live theatre. Unlike other platforms, we provide a curated blend of performances, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content specifically tailored for theatre fans. Our exclusive content, like The Director’s Cut with celebrated theatre directors or our concert series like My Fair Ladies, gives fans unprecedented access to the creative minds behind the scenes. It’s not just about watching a show; it’s about experiencing the heart and soul of the theatre industry.

Has the launch of this platform posed any particular challenges?

Launching a digital platform for theatre has certainly come with its challenges! Building a seamless, high-quality viewing experience took careful planning, especially since we wanted The Theatre Channel to be accessible on multiple devices, from desktop to mobile apps. Another challenge was creating a balance between free and premium content that would be both sustainable and inclusive. But ultimately, these challenges were worth it, as they pushed us to create a platform we’re proud of—one that brings the best of theatre to fans worldwide.

Is there any upcoming content you’d like to share with us?

Yes! We have some exciting content coming up that we can’t wait for audiences to see. We’re thrilled to be hosting Estella Scrooge, a fresh take on the classic A Christmas Carol, which is now available until early this new year. We’re also adding new interviews with some incredible talents from the theatre world, as well as exclusive concerts featuring some of the industry’s brightest stars. There’s always something new to explore on The Theatre Channel, and we’re dedicated to keeping our content lineup fresh and engaging.

Why tune in to The Theatre Channel?

The Theatre Channel offers something truly unique for theatre lovers. Whether you’re looking to experience an exclusive performance, hear from the industry’s top creatives, or simply stay connected to the theatre world, The Theatre Channel is a one-stop destination. We make it easy to enjoy theatre from the comfort of your home, but with all the excitement and passion of a live performance. Our mission is to make theatre more accessible, inclusive, and engaging—and we’re excited to bring our viewers along on this journey.
