Review of ‘Cassidy Janson Live At The Vaudeville’: “Natural woman, you make me feel”

The Olivier-winning actress gave a one-night-only solo concert at the Vaudeville Theatre last night, featuring a repertoire made of the songs that have defined her two decades over the boards. Guillermo Nazara shares his views on the show, to let us know if the earth moved through this raucous performance.

She was congested. She was on drugs (prescribed, I assume). She warned the viewers about her condition before the concert began – and also, that she was feeling rather high. What she didn’t inform us about, though, is that none of those things actually mattered – simply because, besides some very subtle and even more occasional bits, she gave nothing but an absolute flawless performance

If you’re a fan of musical theatre, and even if you’re not, you’re probably in love with this utmost queen of the stage. I’m talking about me, of course. But chances are you’ve also heard about Olivier Award-winning triple threat (singer, actress, and uncontrollable force of nature) Cassidy Janson. And if you haven’t (which means you haven’t read some of my previous articles, and thus, a thousand swords should fall upon your head), perhaps it’s time you get acquainted with her beautiful carol renditions. For, regardless of what the opening of Act Two said, she is, in fact and by all means, that girl.

There’s not much to analyze about a solo gig paying tribute to a career spanning for over two decades, and paid homage to through the themes that have defined that journey. Especially, because there’s very little to include other than praise to her astounding vocals, compelling stamina, infectious comedic ability, and electrifying presence. Not only is she a natural under the spotlight, but she longs for it (in the best way possible) – and such passion solidifies by every second she spends in front of an audience.

Her hit-studded repertoire contributes to the success of the event. A charming collection of iconic pop anthems mixed with iconic MT tunes keep all those memories coming back to us now. Although, to be fair, we couldn’t care less about what she sings (well, maybe we do a little).

But the point is that it just takes her and the band to interpret whatever they want and make of this recital a complete triumph. From their extraordinarily good arrangements to her inexhaustible belting, the whole act is a blasting powder keg of unrestrained emotions, blaring artistry, and pure showmanship – casual in style and random in feel, but in a way executed like a masterful chess play.

Cheerful, lively, touching at moments, and all throughout, extremely entertaining, Cassidy Janson’s last night’s performance gave a bold answer to the question she posed to us ten years ago – and with much of a resounding yes. For there’s no doubt that those who attended yesterday will love her today, and tomorrow, and will keep doing it for many days to come (don’t ruin my poetry with your filthy thoughts…). They put a smile in our faces and ignited a flame in our hearts. And above all, they proved that it’s simply no use to rain in their parade.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
