Following their rise to stardom in the TV competition I Have A Dream and lead performances in the London production of Mamma Mia!, the couple reunites onstage for a special concert, playing at the Cadogan Hall for one night only. Guillermo Nazara chats with both singers – to learn more about their artistic journey and what awaits in this super trouper of a show.
How does it feel to be reunited onstage in one of the most prestigious venues in London?
T: It’s so nice to be back with Stevie for our concert. It’s been way too long since we sang together. This is a really special occasion for me. When I was training at GSA, I was a part of the choir for a lot of concerts that happened at Cadogan Hall. So, to now be headlining our own concert there is a real full–circle moment for me. It’s a bit surreal, if I’m being honest – but I really cannot wait.
S: I’m so excited! The Cadogan Hall is such a beautiful venue, and it feels like the perfect fit for Toby and me to reunite with each other, and also with our fans!
What makes this show different in comparison to other West End star-led concerts?
T: Well, if anything, I would love it to be similar to a lot of the other star-led concerts. I have attended lots of them in the past, and I was completely in awe with the talent and stature of the performers leading those shows. If our concert can be anyway similar to those that have come before me I will be honoured.
S: Toby and I started our journey together with Mamma Mia!, and when it came to an end in October, I think we both thought we wouldn’t perform together again for a while, at least. But here we are! It’s only 7 months later, and we’re already having a reunion! We’re very good friends, and I can’t wait to be back on stage with him!
After the success of the TV show, do the expectations audiences may have for this reunion make it feel daunting in any way?
T: Obviously, it’s a very daunting thought, but our fans have always been so supportive and kind to us that I am really excited to perform this show in front of them. We plan on giving them a really great evening to remember.
S: Our fans have been so supportive of us throughout this whole journey and we’re doing this concert for them. I just feel a lot of love and appreciation. I’m so happy we get to give them this concert as a thank you for their support in getting us where we are now!
How would you describe your artistic journey ever since the I Have a Dream TV show?
T: The TV has presented me with some really incredible experiences, and I will always be grateful for that. I have managed to expand much more into the concert world, I’ve had the privilege of performing at the most amazing venues alongside orchestras I could only ever have dreamed about performing with. Being a vocalist at the BBC Proms was definitely a pinch-me moment.
S: A rollercoaster! We were non-stop for over a year, and when it was all over, part of me was glad to have the rest, but another part misses the thrill of it all! I had such an incredible time in Mamma Mia!, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the road leads to next!
The show will feature a wide range of musical theatre duets. As performers, do you see the versatility of the repertoire, added to the legacy of the songs, as a challenge?
T: Absolutely, the versatility and legacy of the repertoire definitely bring a unique challenge — but it’s a challenge we embrace. Each song has its own energy, its own story, and sometimes even its own fanbase. So, switching between styles while honouring the history behind each track means we have to stay really intentional with how we perform. But that’s also what makes it exciting — we get to connect with different parts of the audience and bring something fresh to each moment on stage.
S: One of the best parts of being a performer is getting to do a variety of material from different shows and styles of music. So, while this can be challenging, it is also something I find really exciting about doing a concert!
Have you found any other challenges in this upcoming performance?
S: Trying to cut down the set list! We want to do it all and unfortunately only have a couple of hours to do so.
In terms of style, will the show feature similar musical arrangements to the original versions or will audience experience something different?
T: Yes, we will definitely be singing some traditional versions of songs, but we do have a few numbers where we are creating our own arrangements.
S: We’ve got to keep some of the classics in there of course, but definitely expect the unexpected!
Are there any surprises in the performance you could give us a hint of?
T: Well, now we have announced our amazing guests, we do have a few ideas for what we could do with them to create some really exciting songs. I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s some really great ideas flying about.
S: We’ve got a couple of little surprise moments. Whether that’s musical medleys or playing unexpected characters.
Why come see ‘Here We Go Again’?
T: Because it’s going to be a night of pure fun, joy, and laughter. We’re doing lots of numbers from our amazing journey and some really exciting songs that we’ve wanted to sing together for a while. It’s not something you’ll want to miss.
S: You’ll get to watch some iconic duets and solos from Toby and me, and some new things that no one has seen before – not to mention performances with our wonderful guests Esme Bowdler and Jacob Fowler! It’s going to be a wonderful evening!
