Alexander Service talks upcoming new production of ‘Grease, The Musical’: “John Travolta’s version isn’t the full and final Danny”

Blackpool Grand Theatre and Pitlochry Festival Theatre go together to bring this brand new version of the classic musical, which will be playing on the summer nights from the start of next month. Guillermo Nazara chats with the show’s lead, to learn why this take on the iconic piece is the one that we want.

How does it feel to be playing such an iconic character in the new production of one of the most popular musicals of all time?

In a word, surreal.

The show first came out over 50 years ago. Why do you think Grease still resonates with modern audiences?

It’s timeless, it taps into the emotions we all feel. We have one version of ourselves that we feel we have to show to the world at certain times, the version of ourselves that is “fine” and “doing well” and fitting in with the crowd (especially nowadays with social media and a camera everywhere). And then, there is the “real” version of ourselves that is insecure and confused and sometimes not okay. Those parts of ourselves constantly battle. Grease tells that human story of kids just trying to find themselves, we can all relate to that. The songs are pretty catchy too!

What makes this production different in comparison to the show’s previous incarnations?

It’s an actor-musician production for one. For the first time ever, I believe, all the music is played by the actors on stage. The rest….. well, I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

How would you describe your approach to the role? Has the movie played any influential part in it?

Of course, the movie has influenced everyone’s view of Danny, and that is something that just has to be accepted, but John Travolta’s version isn’t the full and final Danny. It’s the job of those who follow to expand on what he started.

What has been your process to develop your own version of Danny Zuko?

Really, keep asking questions and keep digging. Try and find out who he is, how did he get here, what is driving him when he is at school and what is driving him when he is away from that group and that hierarchy, what is his home life like, etc.

Have you found any particular challenges in this role?

Acting, singing, dancing and playing guitar all at the same time can be a bit confusing at times, but that’s what rehearsals are for.

Are there any other highlights in this production you’d like to flag?

Too many to list, but mainly the sheer talent of the team involved, the whole cast, the crew, and the creatives have created a wonderful show.

Why come see this production of Grease?

It’s summer and it’s Grease – what’s there not to love?!
