Sir Richard Eyre’s critically acclaimed version of Noël Coward’s classic will be back to the London stage by the end of summer – this time for a limited 8-week run. Starring one of the UK’s best-known comedic actresses, the play centers around a couple haunted by the spirit of the husband’s first wife – who has been accidentally conjured by a preposterous medium.
Some tales just never die – especially when they have to do with ghosts… Noël Coward’s acclaimed comedy Blithe Spirit is returning for a limited run to the London stage – and so is its leading lady! After its first apperance in the West End being abruptly interrupted by the country’s first lockdown, Sir Richard Eyre’s new version of this classic play will be back by the end of summer – moving its haunt from the Duke of York’s to the Harold Pinter Theatre.
Jennifer Saunders, one of the UK’s best-known comedic actresses, returns to the role of the preposterous clairvoyant Madame Arcati. But she won’t be the only one, as the full original cast will be treading the boards by her side. Geoffrey Streatfeild will star as Charles Condomine, while Lisa Dillon will play Ruth Condomine, Simon Coates will be Dr Bradman, Lucy Robinson will be Mrs Bradman and Rose Wardlaw, Edith. Apart from Eyre’s direction, the creative cast includes design by Anthony Ward, lighting by Howard Harrison, sound by John Leonard and illusions by Paul Kieve.
First staged in 1941, the play centers around novelist Charles Condonmine as his spouse, who find themselves stalked by the ghost of his first wife, accidentally conjured up by an eccentric medium. Filled with wit and carefully crafted comedy, it helped appease London audiences during the horrors of World War II, apart from a having record-breaking run both in the West End and on Broadway – still remaining as one of the playwright’s most popular works.
