‘Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist’ to play in the West End for one week only

The show will play at London’s Lyric Theatre for 5 days only, featuring the same lead cast as in its first UK tour. Directed and choreographed by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie, the musical tells, through pop and comedy, the true story of the royal scandal that started the French revolution.

Nothing like a good slice of sweetness to make the crowd go wild – or even lose their heads… It seems like the airs of revolution continue to blow in Shaftesbury Avenue, as the West End commences preparations to welcome the most flamboyant and campiest queen in History – and we’re not talking about Boy George! Next month, the story of Marie Antoinette is relived (and reimagined) through a new original musical making its London debut. Combining a multi-genre pop score with the styles of 18th-century France, Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist brings back the humour to this tragic true tale of gossip and scandal… It all began with a diamond necklace, and it finished with the end of the monarchy!

“Earlier this year we staged an incredible regional tour of Cake that taught us a huge amount about the show, the story we’re trying to tell, how we tell it, and indeed who it might be for”, says producer Paul Taylor-Mills. “The creative team and I were completely energized by this process, and we’ve spent the last couple of months finessing Cake and want to take it back to our followers to show them what we’ve been up to and decide how we best take it forward. To that end, we’ve priced all our tickets for the first show at just £17.55 ensuring it’s as accessible and inclusive as possible. Come share our journey!”.

Bringing back the two leads from the original UK tour, the cast will feature Zizi Strallen (Mary Poppins) as Marie Antoinette and Renée Lamb (SIX) as Jeanne – with the rest of the company members to be announced. The creative team, on the other hand, includes Oliver Award-winner director and choreographer Drew McOnie, as well as book by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and Tasha Taylor Johnson, music and lyrics by Jack McManus and Tasha Taylor-Johnson, set and costume design by Sami Fendall, lighting design by Joshie Harriette and sound design by Andy Sharman.

Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist will play at London’s Lyric Theatre from 20 to 24 September. Tickets are available on the following link.
