Review of ‘Express G & S’: “A Maiden Fair To See”

The Kings of English Operetta do some funny business with the Queen of Mystery (only through comedy!) in this musical farce combining chills, thrillsand a lot of shrills. Guillermo Nazara shares his views on the show, to let us know if this British tar was actually closer to an endless night.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!
(The latter phrase was pranking - I know your age)
Be welcome once again to a versed review
I trust you will enjoy it and find it sage

Today we'll be discussing a brand new show
Which played for one night only at the Wilton's Hall
A campy mix of parodies of previous works
To tamper with the classics, they had the gall!

The words of W.S. Gilbert they dared to change
Though kept his partner's melodies throughout this mess
The plots of Mrs. Christie provide the rest
In this super campy farce, called Express G & S

A mystery is unraveled while on a train
And viewers are encouraged to play a game
That's finding out the true names of every tune
Well, maybe here we should just try the same

And as I get prepared to share my views
I shall explain to you now what we shall do
It is your task to guess which songs I've used
To pen my bitchy lyrics as I critique through

So if you think that you're ready
Pretending to be smart
Let's not waste any time
And right away, we'll start
We cross the West End through
For a show that's wild and fruity
It's silly fun - that's true
But that makes it such a cutie

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found
There is a mystery, there is a mystery
Of a dearest cupcake trolley that appears to be destroyed!
But who could that one be? But who could that one be?
There's the stupid cockney jester who can't see that he's no fun
And then the royal trav'ler who's more boring than a nun
The picky Belge detective who looks like Hercules Poirot
And who's in charge to solve the twists and turns of this mad plot!
But that's not all to see! But that's not all to see!

Voices were buttercups, sweet like dear buttercups,
Such a regalement to hear!
That's the show's highest ups, the show's true highest ups,
And why to hold this piece dear!

Not ever it's clever
Anyway!
There's plenty of laughs that still will come your way!

Though some jokes could be more witty
Seeing this work has been no pity!
For it's on the whole not bland
And for one uncomplicated English spoof
It's been indeed quite grand!
