Steve Coogan to star in stage adaptation of ‘Dr. Strangelove’

The show will start performances next year, marking the first stage adaptation of Kubrick’s iconic film classic. Directed and co-written by Steve Foley, the play tells the hilarious story of a US General who triggers a nuclear crisis.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room. Well, you’d better get ready for it, because the storm is coming anyway – at least, the one that audiences will be taken by next Autumn. Kubrick’s timeless film classic Dr. Strangelove is heading to the London stage in 2024, but that’s not the only familiar name you’ll hear in what’s probably one of the most anticipated montages of the upcoming season. Today, producers have announced that celebrated actor and comedian Steve Coogan will star in the first-ever theatrical adaptation of the iconic movie masterpiece, which will be written by Armando Ianucci and Steve Foley.

“The idea of putting Dr Strangelove on stage is daunting”, says Coogan. A huge responsibility. It’s also an exciting challenge, an opportunity to bring this timeless classic to a new audience. Knowing that I will be part of a creative team led by Sean Foley and Armando Iannucci means I will be working with the best people. Sean is a master of stage comedy and Armando and I started working with each other over 30 years ago. We made some memorable comedy together so it’s great to be collaborating with him once again.”

Also directed by Foley, the play is an uproarious jet-black comedy about a U.S General who triggers a nuclear crisis, presented through explosively funny satire about mutually assured destruction. Produced by Patrick Myles and David Luff, in association with Tulchin Bartner Productions and Playful Productions., the rest of the company and creative team will be announced in due time.

Dr. Strangelove will play at London’s Noel Coward Theatre from 8 October 2024 to 21 December 2024. Tickets will be available from tomorrow, 27 September, on the following link.
