The show will open the venue’s Christmas season, featuring a new original score, as well as music and lyrics, in an updated adaptation bringing further proximity between the characters and its audience. Their latest installment in a long series of reimagined fairy tale classics, the montage will also give the opportunity to young artists to work alongside professional actors, perfecting their skills on and off the stage.
Think of the happiest things – it’s the same as having wings! Well, that line may have not been included in this version, but the feeling of excitement and childlike wonder will certainly pour (maybe even harder) in the upcoming revision of James M. Barrie’s timeless classic. This week, producers have announced the opening of the upcoming musical theatre adaptation of this tale that, just like its lead character, never grows old – featuring a few additional plot twists and tweaks, though keeping the essence that made the original piece soar in the first place.
Enter PAN! Peter’s Come Out To Play, a family show with music by British composer Jordan Xavier, as well as book and lyrics by Geoff Aymer, exploring the themes of innocence and liberty that set the grounds of Barrie’s captivating work, while bringing its narrative closer to today’s audiences – especially, the neighbourhood’s locals. As Peter refuses to age, reveling in his fond memories in Peckham, we will be taken to the tropical realm of Neverland, where he and his friends, The Lost Boys, will relish on the shining joys of music to flee the tedious pressures of adulthood.
“I’m super excited to bring PAN! to Theatre Peckham”, said director Suzann McLean MBE. “We’re taking you to the enchanting world of Neverland. Picture a tropical paradise with the sweet sounds of the steel pan filling the air. It’s going to be an amazing experience! At Theatre Peckham, we’re all about empowering young people and PAN! is a perfect example of that. Our talented academy students will be showcasing their skills alongside seasoned
professionals, giving them an incredible opportunity to shine and grow as artists.”
Performing alongside a cast of professional actors, the company will also welcome young, raw talent – given the opportunity to rising artists to have their talent nurtured by perfecting their skills on and off the stage. Following the same philosophy, their previous repertoire consists of new takes on Rapunzel, set in a hairdressers, also in Peckham; Scroogelicious, a remix of A Christmas Carol; and The Wonderful, inspired by Frank L Baum’s The Wizard of Oz.
PAN! Peter’s Come Out To Play will play at Theatre Peckham from 6 to 23 December. Tickets are available on the following link.
