The international musical theatre legend lands on the Savoy’s stage to lead the show’s first-ever London performance. Guillermo Nazara chats with the actress, to get a glimpse of what’s coming for this one-night-only event where every moment will certainly explode.
How does it feel to be starring in the first-ever West End production of such an anticipated show?
It feels amazing to be finally doing it. We had the intention of bringing it before the pandemic – we even recorded a music video in Covent Garden. We’ve always had the thought that this show was something that needed to be. We did a workshop a little while ago with a wonderful cast. We just loved the story and music so much! We’ve kept asking ourselves this question: “what happens next?”. Maybe we will go to another venue after this first stage. But so far, to put it as a concert is just wonderful.
This show deals with simple, everyday people with an overcomplicated love life. Do you think that’s a reflection of how we operate in a modern society?
Absolutely! We all overthink everything. You make a choice and then you think of what would happen if you had done something else. The beauty of this story is that it shows both ways: what would happen had we chosen one thing or the other. We do overcomplicate things on a general basis, but that’s what makes us human – and that’s the core of the story. It’s about people’s relationships, friendships, love, loss… I think people like to relate to what they’re seeing onstage.

Does the fact that this show is presented in a concert form come as an additional challenge, from an acting perspective?
It’s a lot to learn! We don’t get the luxury of a 4 to 5 week rehearsal as a traditional musical does. But that also adds an element of danger and excitement to it. It’s a one-night-only opportunity, and that brings a lot of electricity to both ourselves and the people who are watching us. There’s so much adrenaline! It’s so exciting because you really don’t know what’s going to happen.
What would you say makes this musical unique in comparison to other shows that also deal with modern-day life?
I think this one is very real. It’s real stories about everyday life we’ve all gone through. It’s parenting, relationships, friendships – that is very real.
Why come see If/Then In Concert?
You simply have to! It’s one night-only. It’s an amazing company where every single member has led West End shows. The fact that we are all coming together as both friends and colleagues is going to guarantee a very special night.
