Kellie Shirley talks new comedy play ‘TWO’: “It’s an actor’s dream”

Following the success of its inaugural run, the play transfers to London’s Park Theatre until the end of April, reuniting the EastEnders and In The Long Run star with his partner in crime, Peter Cauldfield, in a lively semi-immersive performance set in a working-class pub. Guillermo Nazara chats with the actress to learn more about the show’s return and why this play is no small beer.

How does it feel to return to the show after its original run at the Greenwich Theatre?

We didn’t want our run to end last year – so it’s great to have another stab at it – North of the River, I love the Park Theatre!

What enticed you to be a part of this play in the first place?

I mean, to get to play 7 different characters – alongside my good mate, Pete Caulfield. It’s also written by the icon that is Jim Cartwright, and it’s about how brilliant pubs are – come on!? No brainer! (winks)

Fourteen characters portrayed with your co-star throughout a series or intimate vignette. As a performer, is this task as daunting as it sounds?

It’s an actor’s dream! I feel so bloody lucky.

The show is described as a tense reflection on community and relationships. What themes are explored within those fields and how are they explored through your characters?

Love, grief, loss of community, importance of community, the working-class voice, lust, marriage, politics, humour… it’s all in there, mixed with some incredible 80’s bangers!

What’s the message behind the show’s social commentary, if there’s any?

Come see for yourselves – everyone will get different stuff from it. It’s loads of fun, with a light political message that echos today.

The production takes audiences into a North London pub, where the viewers become the punters. How integrated will they be within the narrative?

It’s semi immersive – so audience can be in the action or just be spectators.

Are there any highlights that you would like to flag?

The music, the writing, and being transported back to another era. It’s a unique, fun experience.

Why come see ‘TWO’?

Why not.. beats scrolling ! For 90 minutes do something different, kick back and be immersed.
