Nothing screams Irishness like pub gatherings, beer, folk songs, and perhaps some more beer. With that in mind, there’s nothing else to bring into this equation other than, perhaps, one of Motherland’s most popular ambassadors. Or, in its defect, a tribute act that knows how to honour their legacy — with enough magnetism to make the band’s greatest devotees stand on their feet mid-song, transfixed by the nostalgic allure of the boys from the dirty old town (I’m just referencing the tune…).
The Dubliners are back. They might not be the real ones, but in any case, justice has been done. Following its latest international tour, the show has returned to the UK to celebrate its 10th anniversary, bringing back its extensive (for lack of a more superlative word) tribute to the group’s oeuvre.

Framed as a friendly get-together at a local pub, the show takes viewers through the band’s history, as fun facts about both the members and the repertoire prelude some very powerful renditions, most of which are impeccably executed both vocally and instrumentally.
Their dedication and passion for the material are as evident as they are infectious. And as much as that underpins its pizzazz, it plays to its detriment as well. Unless you have their names tattooed on your chest- or some other area in your body I don’t need to know about -the performance comes out excessively long. And to some extent, it also feels repetitive.
In the end, it panders exclusively to a very limited section of the audience. And although this is logically its core target, it somehow alienates those who might not be as acquainted, oversaturating them with content rather than guiding them through the highlights. Consequently, it denies itself the chance to deliver what, from a narrative and pacing perspective, could have been a more curated, gripping piece.

Easy and slow, Seven Drunken Nights drew ballads, smiles, and memories at the New Wimbledon Theatre — and it will likely continue to do so anywhere it goes. Despite some minor structural problems and a few occasional sick notes, attendees left intoxicated by the act’s outstanding potency.
Talent, commitment, and compelling material come in unison to produce something that, while not perfect, is no less unique and effective. It’s as magical as the rising of the moon. And as exciting as when the schoolday is over.
