Billy Nevers talks West End revival of ‘RENT’: “We really invite the audiences into the action”

Jonathan Larson’s cultural phenomenon returns to the London stage in a new in-the-round production directed by Luke Sheppard. Guillermo Nazara chats with one of the leads about the piece’s relevance today, the challenges of his role, and what makes the show a reason to be out tonight.

How does it feel to join the lead cast in the London revival of RENT?

A dream come true. Cannot believe it is happening!

What enticed you to be part of the show?

It’s RENT! Who would ever say no to RENT! But also the creative team are all people whose work I admire!

What’s new about this revival and how will it make a difference from its predecessors?

It’s extremely immersive and intimate. We really invite the audiences into the action. It definitely feels elevated as a production and we use some really cool ways to tell the story.

The original production premiered at a time when its themes, such as the AIDS crisis, resonated directly with the society of the time. Has the plot been updated to reflect present-day problems?

The plot is the same. RENT is a period piece. Even though it captures a specific time, the story is still relevant and needed today. There are a lot of parallels with life today.

The show is also said to have brought the MTV generation to the theatre. Does this production have a new target audience?

We have a big mix of audiences of all ages. People who loved the original, people who weren’t born when the original came out, people who have never seen the show, people who love the film. It’s a real mix, and that’s very special.

In the show, you play the role of Tom Collins. What can you tell us about your approach to the character?

My approach was to find as much joy and love as possible! The story is full of hard-hitting material, and I get the opportunity for a lot of the show to capture the show in between those moments. So finding that is my key to the character.

What particular challenges have you found in this role?

The show is emotionally very heavy, so taking myself there every night can be a challenge.

Why come see this new production of RENT?

This production is phenomenal. The cast is outstanding. Beautiful set and costume design. Electric choreography and a phenomenal vision and direction.
